Collection: Chinese Wedding Double Happiness Decorations

Many people might be hesitant to incorporate Chinese wedding decorations in their wedding because these traditional decorations may not flow nicely with your wedding theme. As most Asians are opting for a more western wedding these days, there aren't many decorations out there that are modern but captures the essence of the your Asian heritage. My goal is to design Double Happiness wedding decorations that embodies the marriage between the east and the west. Hope you like them!

What does Double Happiness mean?

Double Happiness, pronounced as "sheung hei" in Cantonese or "shuang xi" in Mandarin is a symbol used during Chinese weddings. It is composed of two of the same Chinese characters 喜 ("hei" in Cantonese/"xi" in Mandarin) which means joy and happiness.

Chinese culture also believes that "happiness comes in twos" (好事成雙) which is why Double Happiness is used as a blessing to the newlyweds!

Where to place Double Happiness symbol?

It is customary to see the Double Happiness symbol used throughout a Chinese wedding. This symbol, typically in red or gold, can be found on wedding invitations, table numbers, and wedding favors just to name a few. It is also quite common to have a huge double happiness sign in back of the head table where the bride and groom sit.

If you're having a more western wedding, instead of having a giant double happiness sign or some very traditional Chinese wedding decorations, it might be a better idea to incorporate small aspects of your wedding decor like table numbers or place cards to bring out your Chinese culture but keeps it subtle so it still blends in nicely with the rest of your Asian American wedding theme.

What decorations are used for tea ceremony?

During the Chinese wedding tea ceremony, it is common to have some red and gold traditional Chinese wedding decorations to place around the house. The tea ceremony is when the bride and groom serve tea to their families members (parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles, older siblings...) and in return, they would be presented with gifts and blessings so it's common to have a set of tea set with the double happiness symbol on them.

Another tea ceremony decoration to consider are pillows, preferably with the double happiness symbol or with a red or gold pillow case. You can also add some double happiness signs to display on tables or to hang on walls to add to the festive environment! If you're offering snacks or finger foods, you can consider using double happiness food picks to tie in with the Chinese wedding theme!

Where to buy Chinese Wedding Decorations?

If you're looking for very traditional Chinese wedding decorations similar to what your parents might have used back in the day then you can probably find some at your local Chinatown stores.

These small shops are typically quite old and have been in business for decades and usually sell souvenirs, red envelopes, and all sorts of knick knacks. You would probably need to go ask the cashier as they might be tucked away.

You might be able to find double happiness tea sets, red candles, pillows for the tea ceremony, and cardboard decorations to hang on walls. They are typically very old school and traditional so there's a good chance it might clash with your modern wedding decor.

You can also find some decorations on AliExpress and Temu but the quality might not be what you're looking for. AliExpress also has very long delivery times so it might not be the best if you need something soon.

If you're looking for some modern and unique Chinese wedding decorations to compliment your wedding theme, you can check out some of my double happiness decorations on this page. My decorations capture the essence of the Chinese wedding traditions but bring a modern twist so they can be incorporated nicely into your Asian Western wedding!

What are some Chinese wedding decoration ideas?

If you're planning a Western wedding but would like to incorporate some subtle Chinese wedding decorations into the decor, here are some suggestions for you! First of all, instead of using the color red, you can opt for gold... it's definitely an easier color to match your wedding theme!

Try adding some double happiness symbols in your invitations, place cards, and table numbers to show off your Asian heritage. You can also include double happiness cupcake toppers on your desserts and even make cookies with the double happiness logo on top! It's really up to you how much or how little you want to showcase the double happiness symbol in your decorations!

Why are Chinese wedding decorations red and gold?

Traditional Chinese wedding decorations are usually red or gold. Red is often used in festivities like weddings and Chinese New Year because it represents luck, happiness, prosperity, and good fortune. Gold is also used as it signifies wealth.

What are some Chinese wedding colors to avoid in terms of decorations?

For Chinese wedding decorations, definitely avoid going with white, black, and blue as these colours are associated with mourning and funerals in the Chinese culture, which means bad luck!
